The new, £26m Maxwell Centre expands the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, located West of the city and accommodates approximately 230 people. Designed by BDP over three floors, it comprises research laboratories, seminar rooms and interactive spaces along with dedicated hubs for industrial partners who work alongside Cambridge research groups. The mechanical installation includes laboratory and natural ventilation systems, fume cupboard extraction system and full medical gases, new low temperature hot water and processed chilled water systems, and an automatically controlled Building Management System. An innovative, layered laboratory design ensures services to individual laboratories can be changed without affecting the others. Electrical works include internal and external lighting, data and telecommunication installation, security systems and fire alarm. The building is rated BREEAM excellent.
