Kershaw sets UK record with 21st year of league sponsorship
A Cambridge company has set a UK record by extending its sponsorship of the Cambs FA leagues to a total of 21 years.
Kershaw Mechanical Services – part of the city’s Kershaw Group – has agreed another three years backing the Cambridgeshire Football Association Premier Leagues.
It comes just a few weeks after the Group agreed to back Cambridge United’s away shirts for a record 9th and 10th years.
The new deal with Cambs FA is thought to be the longest sponsorship deal in football.
Kershaw Mechanical Services started its sponsorship in 1991. The new agreement will see it supporting the leagues through to 2012.
Gary Smith is the managing director of Kershaw Mechanical Services. He said: “Kershaw has been involved in the leagues for so long that they are even known as the Kershaw Leagues.
“Some of our staff play in these leagues and we know how much enjoyment everyone gets from the football. So it’s a privilege to be able to support the leagues for another three years.
“We’re looking forward to lots more great football!”
Roger Pawley, chief executive of the Cambs FA, added: “We are delighted that the company have agreed to continue with this sponsorship, both Bill Coad the Association chairman and myself were at the first meeting all those years ago and we are thrilled to still be involved with this new agreement.
“By the company sponsoring our leagues it enables us to provide football for so many clubs and players at a reasonable cost, we also invest some of the monies into improving the standard of play and facilities where possible.”
Kershaw Mechanical Services is part of Kershaw Group, which has its head office in Cambridge, and can track parts of its history back to 1887.
The group is always heavily involved in the local community.
